Representative of Azerbaijani President: Return of 20,000 former internally displaced persons will be ensured by the end of the year

“By the end of 2024, 20,000 former internally displaced persons will be resettled in their own lands,” the representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on special assignments, Elchin Amirbayov said at the International Conference on Demining Activities held in Baku, Paralel.Az reports.

“As stated in the slogan of today's conference, we strive to reduce the environmental impact of landmines and create a safe and green future. Major construction works are being carried out in the liberated territories. Since 2021, USD 7 billion have been invested in restoration and reconstruction works,” - Elchin Amirbayov said.

He noted that the Armenian side refusing to submit mine maps makes the situation even more complicated: “Azerbaijan has taken responsibility for the work to be carried out in those areas. We hope that those in Armenia understand these obligations. The return of former internally displaced persons to their own lands is being delayed. Today, we can regretfully say that Azerbaijan is among the top five states contaminated with mines. It will take years to fully complete demining activities in Azerbaijan. We believe that this conference will enable the sharing of the burden of demining activities and the participation of the international community in this activity.”
