UNFCCC: General secretariat looks forward to working with Azerbaijani government and people at COP29

“We are happy about Azerbaijan's decision to host COP29. Our general secretariat looks forward to working with the Azerbaijani government and Azerbaijani people inorder to host COP29 successfully,” said Chhaya Kapilashrami, Director General for Coordination of Operations of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Paralel.Az reports.

According to her, today more than 190 countries have held discussions on climate change and are trying to reach common conclusions, and they expect these discussions to be held in Baku next year:

"The UN General Secretariat provides continuous support and recommendations to countries regarding the transition to green energy. We hope that our discussions on the green transition will continue, and at the same time, we hope that our discussions will continue on the financing of this transition. We hope that this topic will be one of the main topics at COP29.

On the first day of COP28, we saw a demonstration of solidarity in the field of creating a fund to provide financial support to countries affected by the negative consequences of climate change. The agenda of the conference was also approved on the first day, and discussions on adaptation to the consequences of climate change have been ongoing for the past two weeks. We hope that there is a consensus on the adoption of the final document in these negotiations at COP29. Imagine that there are 198 countries, each of them has a different opinion, we are trying to solve it by consensus, to reach a common decision. I believe that consensus will be reached because there is political will for it, all parties are committed to this process and our secretariat is working effectively," she said.
