"The U.S. will not extend the waiver of the 907th amendment, which prohibits direct aid to Azerbaijan, unless progress is achieved in the Azerbaijani-Armenian peace talks," Assistant Secretary of U.S. State for European and Eurasian Affairs James C. O'Brien said at the hearing held at the Foreign Affairs Committee, Paralel.Az reports.

"We have clearly stated that after the events of September 19, nothing will be normal with Azerbaijan until we see progress on the path of peace. That is why we have canceled several high-level meetings, and condemned the actions...

We do not expect to introduce a waiver (extension) of Amendment 907 (which bans direct US aid to Azerbaijan) until we see real developments in the situation," O'Brien said.

James O'Brien stressed that the U.S. continues its activities in the direction of the peace agreement. According to him, the next few weeks will be critical in expressing the parties' good intentions.

The diplomat added that 13 high-level visits were made to Baku and Yerevan after September 19. He said that the State Department is also dealing with the Turkish colleagues regarding the peace process.
