Maia Sandu wins Moldova runoff with 55.41% votes

Moldova’s president, Maia Sandu, secured a second term in office in Sunday’s election, a major boost to her mission to make her tiny country a European Union member, Paralel.Az reports citing The Washington Post.

With over 99 percent of votes counted, Sandu led with 55.41 percent in the second round of voting against Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor general.

“Moldova, you are victorious!” Sandu said in claiming victory after midnight. “Today, dear Moldovans, you have given a lesson in democracy, worthy of being written in history books. Today, you have saved Moldova!”

“You have shown that nothing can stand in the way of the people’s power when they choose to speak through their vote,” she added.

Sandu delivered part of her speech in Russian to say that she “has heard the voice of every citizen,” both those who supported her and those who voted for Stoianoglo.

“I pledge to be the president for all of you. In our choice of a decent future, no one will lose. We may hold different points of view, speak different languages, but we all want peace, mutual understanding and a decent life for our children,” she said.
