A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has been recorded in Kyrgyzstan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported on its website, Paralel.Az reports citing TASS.

According to the center’s data, the epicenter of the quake was on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, 43 kilometers southeast of Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, and 27 kilometers north of the resort city of Cholpon Ata, Kyrgyzstan.

The earthquake was not felt in Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek. According to preliminary data from the Kyrgyz Emergencies Ministry, there were no casualties or damage. The Institute of Seismology at Kyrgyzstan’s National Academy of Sciences said that the epicenter of the earthquake, measuring 5.4, was 190 kilometers north of Bishkek and 35 kilometers northwest of Almaty. The intensity of the quake was about 3.5 in Bishkek and 4.5 in Almaty.

The threat of aftershocks remains in Almaty following the quake, Nurlan Atygayev, head of the city’s Emergency Department, said. "No casualties or damage have been reported so far," he added.
