On February 21, 2024, a rally was held in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia in protest against Minister of the Interior of France Gérald Darmanin and France's delegate minister for overseas Marie Guévenoux's visit, and the Azerbaijani flag was raised again during the protests, Paralel.Az reports.

The main goal of the protest was directed against the changes that the Government of France wanted to make in the local voting procedure to change the political balance in New Caledonia.

As you know, the residents of New Caledonia are divided into several electoral rolls. The French citizens who do not meet certain requirements (For example, even if the Paris resident has lived in New Caledonia for more than 10 years) are not able to participate in the future fate of New Caledonia and in provincial elections. The French government currently intends to grant the mentioned people said rights by making a change and thus ending the dominance of activists fighting for independence.

A confrontation took place during the rally between the police and the protesters. The police used tear gas.

The political movements and parties of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and French Polynesia cooperating with the Baku Initiative Group have made a statement in support of the protests held today in New Caledonia at the initiative of the Baku Initiative Group.
