Americans lost $ 501 million

 

According to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Americans lost a total of $ 501 million as a result of fraudulent activities related to COVID-19.
Since the beginning of last year, the department has received more than 558,000 complaints from consumers related to the coronavirus in one way or another. In 60% of these cases, fraud was registered. The average per capita loss from fraud was about $ 370. The FTC notes that the fraudsters used many different schemes to deceive the Americans. As Americans began to actively order online stores during the pandemic, online commerce accounted for about 16% of all fraud cases (53,000). The FTC notes that many consumers who order popular product categories have fallen victim to fake sites. The loss of Americans as a result of fraudulent activities related to various tourism opportunities amounted to about $ 77 million.
