Comoros Union representative: Colonialism contradicts with France's own legislation

The referendum held for the independence of the Comoros islands is fully consistent with Article 53 of the French Constitution, Mohamed Rafsandjani Hassani, a representative and lawyer of the Comoros Union, at a conference in Baku titled "The Illegal Occupation of Mayotte Island by France in the Union of Comoros," Paralel.Az reports.

He stated that the islands have not been integrated into French territory in any way: "We can see not only from the perspective of international law but also from the standpoint of French legislation that colonialism contradicts their own laws. However, they are clearly violating this provision with their colonial policies. The referendum for independence on the territory of the islands is fully in line with Article 53 of the French Constitution. Because the article says: We cannot incorporate any region into our territory without the consent of its people. According to French law, the mentioned island has not been integrated into the country in any manner. According to the French Constitution, overseas territories are distinct from the metropolis. They justify themselves by claiming that they can treat the inhabitants of colonial territories as they wish."
