Russia labels Clooney Foundation as 'undesirable'

Russian authorities announced on Monday that they have classified The Clooney Foundation for Justice, a U.S.-based nonprofit, as an 'undesirable' organization, claiming it engages in Hollywood-scale activities to tarnish Moscow's image, Paralel.Az reports citing Devdiscourse.

Established by actor George Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, the Foundation is now subject to a complete ban under Russian law.

The 'undesirable' designation, used since 2015, has been applied to numerous foreign entities. Russian officials allege the Clooney Foundation supports so-called 'false patriots' who have fled the country and accuse it of using humanitarian initiatives to criticize Russian leadership and legal frameworks concerning foreign agents and NGOs.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice has yet to comment on the designation. Russia's 'undesirable' list includes various media outlets, political, cultural, and religious groups seen as threats to national security, highlighting an ongoing crackdown on dissent.
