Radioactive water leak at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2

Leak of 25 tons of water contaminated with radioactive materials occurred at the second power unit of the damaged Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, Paralel.Az reports.

The leak was discovered after the water level in a tank used to measure the amount of water in the pool used to cool the spent nuclear fuel of the second reactor dropped. The water level in the pool itself is normal.

During the inspection of the reactor building it was found that about 25 tons of water had entered the basement through the sewer systems. No leaks to the outside were recorded.

The pumping of water into the pool to cool the fuel has been suspended, but TEPCO assures that this will not lead to the fuel exceeding the maximum temperature of 65 degrees Celsius. Later, a robot will be introduced into the building of the second power unit for a more detailed inspection.
