At least five people went missing and 24 others were injured in a flash flood in the northern Iranian province of Mazandaran, local media reported on Wednesday, Paralel.Az reports citing Xinhua.

The flood, caused by heavy rainfall, occurred on Tuesday night on an intercity road in Savadkuh County, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Search operations were underway by the rescuers of the provincial Red Crescent Society (RCS) to find those missing, IRNA quoted Managing Director of Mazandaran's RCS Gholamali Fakhari as saying on Wednesday.

He added the flood had affected 144 people and 30 villages, and buried a large number of vehicles beneath the debris washed down by the water from the mountains.

Speaking to the Iranian Students' News Agency, Zakaria Ashkpour, the spokesman for the emergency center of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, said all the injured individuals, including 10 women and 14 men, had been transferred to hospitals.
