Foreign agents bill takes Georgia in wrong direction, says NATO Chief

"Foreign agents bill takes Georgia in the wrong direction," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told RFE/RL, Paralel.Az reports.

Asked if it would be necessary in response to reducing NATO's engagement with Georgia, a country that has applied to join NATO, Stoltenberg said the foreign agents bill "takes Georgia in the wrong direction" and NATO allies expressed concern with look at this.

"We must ensure that the aspirations of the Georgian people to live in a democratic society are fulfilled," he said.

The NATO-Georgia partnership "has broad support" within the alliance, he added, and while concerns had been raised, there had been no discussion of the ramifications of the "foreign agent" legislation.
