11 killed after storm hits Rio de Janeiro

 

At least 11 people were killed in Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil as a result of a recent storm triggering landslides and floods, local authorities said on Sunday, Paralel.Az reports citing Xinhua.

The storm that occurred early on Sunday affected the northern area of the city, as well as neighboring municipalities such as Niteroi, Duque de Caxias, Belford Roxo and Sao Jose de Meriti.

Hundreds of people evacuated their homes due to the floods, said the fire department.

The city's mayor, Eduardo Paes, declared a "state of emergency" to access emergency resources and care for people affected by the flooding.
