Last week, Maldonado said he had won a labor lawsuit against former Baja California Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdes of Primer Sistema de Noticias, where he worked, after a nine-year lawsuit. He also sued Guillermo Ruiz Hernandez, Valdez's lawyer, accusing him of malpractice and other crimes.
In 2019, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador spoke at a press conference about his lawsuit against journalist Valdes and expressed fear for his life. Since 2021, it has been under the auspices of the federal government.
Maldonado became the second journalist to be killed in Baja California in the past week. Earlier it was reported that crime journalist Margarito Martinez was shot dead on the threshold of his home in Tijuana. Martinez has collaborated with local and international publications as an author and photographer.
In 2021, seven journalists were killed in Mexico, the highest number of any country in the world.
