Gorbachev spoke about the collapse of the USSR

August 18 marked the 30th anniversary of the creation of the State Commission for Emergency Situations headed by Yanaev, which led to the collapse of the USSR.
This was stated by Mikhail Gorbachev, Paralel.az reports with reference to Vesti.ru.
In his speech, the former president of the USSR accused the organizers and signers of the Belovezhskaya Pact of the collapse of the union. The 1991 coup failed, he said, but weakened the position of the USSR president and made further efforts to defend the union more difficult.
“The republics adopted declarations of independence, but there was still a chance to defend the union in an updated way, but in December a second blow was struck: the Belovezhskaya murder of the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, who announced the end of the USSR,” Gorbachev said.
Gorbachev recalls the events of August 1991: “I categorically rejected the demand of the rebels, who isolated me in Foros and cut off all communications, to send a representative to sign the state of emergency. I called their actions a crime, an adventure. In a statement to the Council, I said that the actions of the State Committee for Emergency Situations were aimed at deceiving the people and usurping power. "
In his speech, Gorbachev also called for the protection of democratic principles and the exclusion of the possibility of usurpation of power: “I believe that the lessons of those days are relevant today. Defending the principles of democracy and the rule of law ”. that the democratic path of development of Russia is the only correct path, only in this way can our country develop and solve all problems. "
Earlier, Alexander Lukashenko named those responsible for the collapse of the USSR. According to the President of Belarus, these are the first President of Russia Boris Yeltsin and President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev. Lukashenko added that the Swedish publication Svenska Dagbladet thanked Gorbachev for the collapse of the USSR.
