Afghan President Ashraf Ghani leaves the country

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, along with his vice president and other senior officials, left the country on Sunday to pave the way for Taliban insurgents to return to power in Afghanistan 20 years after the US-led military offensive.
As Taliban fighters took over key positions in the city, senior members of the Taliban military commission entered the presidential palace in Kabul.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed on Sunday that militants were sent to protect security posts and other facilities in Kabul "to prevent chaos and looting after Afghan forces left them."
The Mujahid urged residents to remain calm and said that this step is aimed at ensuring the safety of people.
Ghani could not be reached for comment.
