A suspect detained by police in front of a shopping mall in Istanbul was found to be carrying 70 kilos of gold, Paralel.Az reports citing the Turkish NTV channel.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The report noted that 70 kg of gold was found on an Azerbaijani national in Istanbul as a result of an operation conducted by the Anti-Smuggling Department within the framework of the instructions given by the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office.

The detained person introduced himself as a diplomat. He also stated that the gold belonged to him.

The suspect was detained while in a taxi.
