Peaceful protest held at COP29 to draw global attention to New Caledonia-PHOTO
The delegation of New Caledonia, a French colonial territory, organized a peaceful protest outside the venue of the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to draw global attention to the country's issues, Paralel.Az reports.
The representatives of the Kanak people, who participated in the protest with various slogans, demanded a more sensitive approach from the international community to both colonization and the problem of the area being subjected to an environmental disaster by France: "As you can see, the purpose of our action here is related to countries not fulfilling their obligations on climate change. Countries located in the south, especially Congo, have problems related to climate change, as well as oxygen depletion. Although certain programs have been adopted to prevent them, this may not be enough. We demand that the countries fulfill their obligations".
Mari-Lin Oudare Sakilia, a member of the New Caledonian Parliament, pointed out that France has been illegally exploiting mineral deposits in her country for many years: "The purpose of our action here is to convey the voice of our countries to the world. Our countries are kept under colonial rule by France. Illegal extraction of natural resources is taking place here, which is polluting the atmosphere. COP29 gives us the opportunity to make our voices heard globally."
