Council Chairman: Official Yerevan does not respond to appeals for environmental violations, monitoring must be conducted in Armenia

"Non-governmental organizations operating in the ecological field in Azerbaijan demand monitoring of metallurgical deposits in Armenia with the involvement of both international and Azerbaijani experts," Amin Mammadov, the Chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan said during today’s briefing, Paralel.Az reports.

He stated that the Armenian side must submit reports on the operations of factories engaged in harmful activities in its territory, in accordance with the requirements of the internationally recognized ESCO Convention.

Amin Mammadov added that following information about the construction of a metallurgical plant in the Arazdeyen area, protests against this activity were voiced in Azerbaijan, and a letter was addressed to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan; however, the official Yerevan has not responded to the appeal:

"In accordance with the requirements of the internationally recognized ESCO Convention, a country engaged in harmful activities must submit reports on the operations of such factories. However, Armenia disregards this. Satellite images presented in August 2023 show that Armenia is engaged in metallurgical activities in areas close to the conditional border with Azerbaijan. As well as it carries out harmful processing activities at the 'Amulsar' deposit. Armenia must create conditions for monitoring in areas where it is engaged in the mining industry, and the Azerbaijani side should also participate in this process."

According to him, foreign companies also actively participate in this illegal activity on the territory of Armenia.
