Int'l community should increase pressure on France to end its illegal presence in our country - Comoros Union official

France clearly disregards international law, and attempts to legalize colonial policies, Mohamed Toihiri, former ambassador of the Comoros Union to the United Nations, said at a conference in Baku titled "The illegal occupation of Mayotte Island by France in the Union of the Comoros", Paralel.Az reports.

He noted that as part of this policy, official Paris has attempted several times to stage coups in the region: "In the last referendum held in 1976 for the independence of the Comoros, 74% of people voted in favor of independence. As a result, the independence of the Comoros was declared. Subsequently, the African Union recognized the independence of the region. Later, the UN Security Council recognized the independence of the Comoros. However, France did not participate in the relevant meeting of the UN Security Council. After that, the French government attempted several coups in the territory of the islands. Despite all international resolutions, France’s further illegal action is that they openly disregard the UN Security Council’s decisions and continue to try to legitimize their colonial policies. The attempts of this state to legalize its position in those territories are illegal. France continues to pursue its colonial ideas. Official Paris still maintains control over the maritime zone around the Comoros. France illegally implemented a visa policy there in 1975, primarily aiming to restrict the movement of the local people. I believe that the international community should increase pressure on France to end its illegal presence in the Comoros."
