10,285 square kilometers of Azerbaijan’s liberated territories are considered to be contaminated at different levels by mines and unexploded ordnance,” Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) said at the opening of the 3rd international humanitarian demining conference held in Zangilan, Paralel.Az reports.

According to him, it is possible that more than one million mines have not yet been removed: "Besides, during the occupation, the rivers were also heavily polluted. At the same time, the environment was contaminated with other explosives besides mines. In total, after 44 days of war, 361 people became victims of landmines and 293 people were seriously injured. Since 1991, more than 3,000 citizens have been victims of landmines. The presence of mines has become a big problem in the territory and region. About 900 residences were destroyed, land was left unused and agriculture was damaged. This becomes a big environmental problem. Tartar, Hakari, and Gargar rivers were also subjected to great environmental pollution during the occupation.”

Noted that as a result of the demining process implemented so far, a territory of ​​about 140 thousand hectares has been cleared of 119 thousand 946 mines and unexploded military ammunition.
