US, Japan reportedly plan big defense treaty update
The United States and Japan are going to unveil plans to overhaul their bilateral security pact in light of the threat from China, Paralel.Az reports citing Financial Times.
US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida are expected to make the announcement at the White House on April 10, according to five people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the plans will include "restructuring the US military command in Japan to strengthen operational planning and exercises between the nations." One of the models under consideration allegedly includes the creation of a "new US military joint task force that would be attached to US Pacific Fleet" in Hawaii and that would eventually be transferred to Japan.
