Discussions on expediency of Russian base in Armenia harmful - FM

The Russian military base is located in Armenia under an agreement and it is harmful to talk about its expediency on the territory of the republic, said Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in an interview with TASS about the results of 2023, Paralel.Az reports.

“We consider discussions on the expediency of the 102nd Russian military base on the territory of Armenia harmful. The agreement on its deployment there was concluded on March 16, 1995, based primarily on national interests and the common goal of our states to strengthen stability in the South Caucasus," the minister noted.

Lavrov noted that today, the Russian Army is “the main element in ensuring peace in this region."

Note that the Russian 102nd Military Base was placed in Armenia according to the interstate Agreement that was reached between Moscow and Yerevan in 1995. On August 20, 2010, the Russian Federation and Armenia extended the term of the agreement on placing the base to 2044. The air component of the Russian 102nd Military Base in Gyumri is the Erebuni airbase located in Yerevan.
