The American poet became the first black woman to make a quarter coin in honor of Maya Angelo: “The BBC reports that the US Treasury has minted 25 cents in honor of the poet Maya Angelo. For the first time in history, a banknote bearing the name of a black woman.
Maya Angelou, a poet-writer and social activist, who died in 2014, became the first black woman to read a poem by Bill Clinton at the presidential inauguration in 1993.
The American Women's Quarters program will produce coins for other women pioneers, including astronauts, tribal leaders and actresses.
